MT. PLEASANT—The Sanpete High School Rodeo Club will host its spring rodeo on Saturday, April 5, at the Contoy Arena in Mt. Pleasant City, with more than 350 high school competitors expected to enter events ranging from bareback riding and barrel racing to tie-down roping. The club is one of 18 high school rodeo programs across Utah, each of which hosts meets during the spring and fall seasons.
Sanpete’s club features 21 athletes, several of whom excelled last year. Notably, Baylee Denton won the girls cow cutting state title, and she qualified for nationals along with Austin Denton and Audrey Tree. “These are incredible kids,” said Ashley Denton, the club’s outgoing secretary.
The Sanpete club operates under the Utah High School Rodeo Association (UHSRA), which awarded more than $130,000 in scholarships to graduating members last year. The organization currently has 595 high school members and 220 junior high members statewide. More than 500 contestants are expected to compete at the state finals in Heber City this year, with junior high events scheduled May 22-24 and high school events running June 2-7. A trade show featuring local vendors will also be held during the finals; a full schedule is available at UHSRA.org.
Denton plans to step down from her role as secretary at the end of the season. She encourages any high school–age students interested in joining to contact incoming secretary Cathie Beesely at sanpeterodeo@gmail.com or 469-0663.
