SALT LAKE CITY—Gunnison Valley High School took the 2A state championship in cheerleading last Friday, Jan. 21 at Salt Lake Community College.

The team competed in three categories, taking first place in Co-Ed Showtime, second in Sideline Cheer and third in Sideline/Timeout Freestyle.

Two team members, JaKelle Sorenson and Asia Lozano competed in the jump-off. JaKelle placed third in 2A.

Coach Kim Sorenson said the win feels like a dream. She has been a cheer coach for 10 plus years. When she first started coaching, she wanted to build a competition team and take state.

“We did it,” she said. “We took state! We are state champions in Co-Ed Showtime.”

COVID stopped the team from competing last year. They missed out on so much and they “wanted it this year,” Sorensen said. So, they set a few goals.

The first one was to do well at region, and they did that. The second goal was to keep the team focused and healthy, she said. “We wanted to ‘amp up’ our stunts and stay confident,” she said. “We did just that, and it is such an awesome feeling.”

Coach Danie Comin said the cheerleading team’s theme this year was, “It’s Our Time,” and she felt it in her bones that this was their season. She said the cheerleaders exceeded all of her expectations.

“We had great captains who set the tone, great choreography, and everyone wanted it so bad,” Comin said. “It still feels like a dream! I truly have been so blessed to call this cheer family mine. I’m so thankful I get to coach with two of my best friends who push and teach me every day.”
