UDOT and CentraCom expanding fiber coverage in Central Utah

FAIRVIEW—CentraCom is working with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to install nearly 70 miles of fiber along highways such as SR-28, US-50, US-6 and US 89 as part of the Central Utah Fiber project.

CentraCom is currently working in the Gunnison Valley area, following their purchase of Gunnison Valley Telephone Company recently.

Construction will probably conclude by the end of 2026. Crews also installed three public Wi-Fi hot spots in the Gunnison area, providing free internet access.

A CentraCom official explained that internet goes from an internet backbone (national), through middle-mile fiber, high-speed fiber that runs along highways, connecting to last-mile fiber, which extends to homes, businesses, school and public buildings.

UDOT’s goal is to build a statewide fiber network, especially along the middle-mile fiber state roadways. The plans are to strengthen emergency services and response, support economic development, improve remote working capabilities, and connect individuals and family to essential services.
