Recovery Day brings resources, speakers, Taiko drummers and a cornhole rematch

MT. PLEASANT — Sanpete County’s recovery community will gather Friday evening for free food, drumming and a cornhole rematch against local first responders.

The fourth annual Sanpete Recovery Day runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at Mt. Pleasant City Park, 1000 South State St. The event is free and open to the public.

Cheryl Swapp, a moderator of the S.A.F.E. (Sanpete Area Family Events) Facebook group who does drug and alcohol case management out of the Sheriff’s Office, is the event organizer.

"Recovery Day isn’t only for those in recovery," Swapp says in the announcement. "It’s for everyone—individuals in recovery, family members, friends, first responders, community members and anyone who believes in second chances and supporting one another."

The lineup includes booths with community resources and giveaways; free acudetox (piercing designed to promote stress relief); a kids zone with bounce houses; a free sloppy joe dinner made with local beef; raffles; a Recovery Wall and Hope Wall; and overdose prevention and naloxone information.

The Utah Taiko Drummers are also scheduled to perform.

The cornhole tournament matches the Sober Tossers, drawn from the recovery community, against the Code 3 Bosses, made up of first responders.

Three featured speakers are listed: Evan Done, a person in long-term recovery who serves as an official with Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness and on the board of Faces & Voices of Recovery; Mark Miner, an addiction recovery program facilitator and real estate agent with Sanpete roots; and Cade Cooper, a YouTuber who hosts "Gettin’ Your Life Back with Cade Cooper."

September is National Recovery Month, an observance the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration uses to promote treatment and celebrate people in recovery. This year’s national campaign is called "The Great American Recovery."
