Bobbie Sorenson

Bobbie Sorenson, 91, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, passed away July 10, 2022 at his home in Gunnison, surrounded by his family.

Born at his grandparents’ home in Fayette on April 22, 1931 in Fayette, to Leo Andrew and Alton Lafon James Sorenson. Bobbie grew up in Gunnison and graduated from Gunnison High School. He enjoyed math, basketball, baseball and track.

Bobbie married Verda Mae Thomas, the love of his life in the Manti Temple on Aug. 30, 1951.

Drafted into the army in 1952 during the Korean War, Bobbie was assigned to basic training at Fort Ord, California. He was then assigned to the NCO Academy in Austria/ Germany where he was advanced to the rank of a corporal. While at the academy he was honored for his physical ability to do 100 sit-ups in a row.

Bobbie bought a farm in Gunnison in 1955 and was a very particular farmer. He worked hard at making it very profitable and beautiful for 65 years and loved every minute of it. Working for U&I (Utah and Idaho) Sugar Company for 18 years on the crane and as a mechanic, Bobbie was recognized for his leadership abilities and was asked to be the manager at the U&I Sugar terminal in West Jordan, Utah for 10 years. His employees looked up to him as an example and friend. Many were friends for life.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served as the ward executive secretary and also as a home teacher.

He loved being outdoors, farming, camping, hunting and getting Christmas trees with his family. Bobbie enjoyed target shooting with his kids and grandkids.

Bobbie is survived by his wife, Verda Mae, Gunnison; children: Leo David Sorenson, Gunnison; Dorothy (Clark) Staley, Coalville; Gary (Kathy) Sorenson, Oakley; Bobet- ta (Curt) Butters, Wanship; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Larry Bobbie Soren- son and a sister, Leona Jensen.

A special thanks is given to his son, Leo, for being his buddy in farming and his caretaker later in life.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 15, 2022 in the Gunnison Stake Center. There will be no public viewing. Burial was in the Gunnison City Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti. Online guestbook at www. maglebymortuary.com.
