JUAN DIEGO H.S.—The Bulldogs’ typical presence in the later rounds of playoff baseball was not to be felt in 2022.
Gunnison Valley baseball finished their season in the second round of the one-loss bracket in the 2A baseball state championship tournament, losing in a tight matchup to Milford last Thursday, 7-5.
The Bulldogs finished their season with an overall record of 9-18, their only season with more losses than wins since before the year 2000.
Gunnison played Milford close in their final game of the season, but the Tigers led from beginning to end, scoring the first four runs of the game in the first two innings before Gunnison got on the board in the third inning. With Milford up 7-3 at the bottom of the seventh inning, Gunnison rallied to get two runs on the board, but that was all they could do as the Tigers advanced to the next round.
Milford lost in the very next game to Millard, 9-5, the same day.
Playing his final game for the Bulldogs, senior Tate King led the team with two RBI both scored when he hit a triple in the seventh inning. They combined for eight total hits. Junior Easton Newman pitched most of the game and threw three strikeouts while allowing six hits in five innings.
Gunnison graduates four seniors as part of the class of 2022: King, Tray Cox, Makade Zufelt and Myles Bartholomew.
