GUNNISON— Danny Hill, long-time coach and former athletic director at Gunnison Valley High School, will be inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame on April 11, 2017.
Coach Hill taught for 42 years at Gunnison Valley High School, from 1970 to 2012. He coached basketball for 32 years, baseball for 19 years and he was athletic director for 12 years. Coach Hill emphasized to his players that education was the most important thing in their scholastic careers. He required his players to attend all classes, and have a passing grade in all classes. Players had to complete assignments on time to be able to play. He taught that being successful in the classroom translated into success on the court or field.
As a basketball coach, Coach Hill’s teams won nine regional championships and four state championships. His overall record was 422 wins and 311 losses. In baseball, his teams won eight regional championships, and four state championships, with an overall record of 182 wins and 39 losses.
In 1981, the Utah Coaches Association selected Coach Hill as the Baseball Coach of the Year and asked to represent the Utah Coaches Association at the District Conference. Coach Hill won the 1997 2A Utah Coach of the Year for Distinguished Service, from the Utah High School Athletic Association. The Gunnison Alumni Association awarded Coach Hill the Outstanding Service and Achievement Award in 2010, and in 2016, he was inducted into the Gunnison High School Athletic Hall of Fame as Coach and Athletic Director.
