GUNNISON—After having the lives of people close to her impacted by substance abuse, the new Miss Gunnison Valley has made a pledge to help educate local youth about the dangers of drugs.
Saturday, July 8, Madelynn Hill, daughter of Ben and Megan Hill of Gunnison was crowned 2017 Miss Gunnison Valley. Her platform is “Make the Choice Now to be Drug-Free.”
“I have had family who has struggled with addiction,” Hill said. “It made me realize how big of a problem it is. I want to help educate my valley that drugs aren’t something to be messed with.”
Hill says she plans to hold talks at Gunnison Valley schools to give students lessons on the many perils of substance abuse.
The pageant wasn’t all serious business to Hill though, she says.
“I had a ton of fun being with the other girls and getting to know them,” she said.
Hill’s talent at the pageant was a piano solo to “Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman” by Mozart.
“I really want to thank my piano teacher,” Hill said, “and also my parents, and my grandma Stella.”
Hill’s first attendant is Lindzey Harding, daughter of Dan and Jenni Harding and Lacey and Doug Argen. She competed on the platform, “Seat belts save lives,” and her talent was a jazz dance to “Hold My Hand,” by Jess Glyme.
The second attendant is Alexis Winters, daughter of Bonnie Winters of Gunnison. Her platform was “Clean Teens,” and her talent was a jazz solo to “I Wanna Dance: We Found Love Remix.”
Pageant director Kara Jensen says she was very pleased with the outcome of the pageant, and the way the girls represented themselves.
“Every contestant performed to the best of their abilities,” Jensen said. “We are proud of them. We all are also looking forward to a great year with Madelynn, Lindzey and Alexis.”
