Gunnison holding Main Street Roundup, United We March on Sept. 11, 12

GUNNISON—A “street stroll” and the annual United We March observance are scheduled in Gunnison Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11 and 12.

On Friday, Sept. 11 an event described as a Main Street Roundup, sponsored by the Gunnison Main Street Alliance, will be held from 4-10 p.m. The event is being billed as a “community celebration for the whole family.”  

It begins at 4 p.m. with a sidewalk sale along Main Street featuring pop-up vendors or “entrepreneurs of all ages” who want to offer goods or services.

Food, games and activities will be offered from 4-6 p.m. Food vendors who have already signed up include T&H Aloha Grill, La Bonita, TBK Pizza and Twisted Sister. Baked goods are also available.

Games and activities available along Main, also primarily from 4-6 p.m., will include laser tag, a mechanical bull, an escape room and a mystery duck hunt.

Meanwhile, karaoke, an open mic, and a Kahoots competition will be in operation at the Casino Star Theatre.

From 6-7 p.m., Eric Dodge, nationally known country-music performer, will direct line dancing on 100 South. He will present a concert at 7 p.m., followed by a street dance and more karaoke at the Casino Star.

This year’s United We March observance on Saturday, Sept. 12, occurs one day after the 25th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center in 2021.

It begins with a unfurling of Big Betsy, a giant American flag, at 6:20 a.m. at Gunnison City Park.

A staple of United We March is a “gut check,” a physical challenge designed to test participants’ endurance and commitment. This year, it’s a 125-mile bike ride from Gunnison City Park to Fish Lake and back. In-person registration begins at 8 a.m. and the ride at 9 a.m. Riders donating $25 or more will receive a Gut Check patch.

United We March will also include the March of Angels, a modified gut check for people with physical challenges. It begins at 8 a.m. at Gunnison City Park. Participants will need one “comrade” to assist them. Track chairs may be reserved for the event.
