Gunnison Valley splits region games against Duchesne, North Summit
GUNNISON — Gunnison Valley earned a road win against Duchesne before dropping a home region game to North Summit last week.
The Bulldogs opened the stretch with a 66-47 victory Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Duchesne, building an early lead and controlling the game throughout.
Gunnison Valley jumped out to a 20-9 advantage in the first quarter and extended the margin to 33-15 by halftime. The Bulldogs continued to outscore Duchesne in the second half, holding the Eagles to 47 points overall.
Braxton Pickett led Gunnison Valley with 27 points, while Landry Edwards added 23. Daxton Knudsen scored six points, and the Bulldogs received scoring contributions from six players in the win.
The victory marked a strong defensive effort, as Gunnison Valley limited Duchesne to single-digit scoring in the first two quarters and forced the Eagles to play from behind for most of the night.
Two days later, Gunnison Valley returned home and fell 66-59 to North Summit in a Region 15 matchup Friday, Jan. 9.
North Summit took control early, outscoring the Bulldogs 13-6 in the opening quarter and carrying a 33-25 lead into halftime. Gunnison Valley narrowed the gap in the second half but could not close the deficit late.
Daxton Knudsen led the Bulldogs with 23 points in the loss. Braxton Pickett scored nine points, while Landry Edwards and Porter Comin added six points apiece.
Despite the loss, Gunnison Valley outscored North Summit 18-13 in the fourth quarter, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
The Bulldogs left the two-game stretch with a split in region play and prepared to continue Region 15 action in upcoming games.
