SAINT GEORGE – Gunnison Bulldog wrestlers attended the Desert Storm Classic tournament over the weekend at Desert Hills High School in St George.
The tournament is an individual tournament where wrestlers compete in brackets of wrestlers in their same weight classification rather than team against team.

Tezlin Winn placed fourth in the 138-weight class. Winn was able to beat Curtis Shaeffer of Olympus High, Cole Johnson of Hurricane High and Logan Hanchett of Show Low High. Sam Rasmussen of Millard was Winn’s first loss of the tournament in the semifinal match. He then had a tough match and was defeated by Jake Olsen of Canyon View.
Jerrit Anderson placed sixth in the 120-weight class, beating Jarryn Brooks of Dixie and Carson Smith of Snow Canyon. Anderson lost his second match against Smith in the 5th and 6th place match.
Coach Whitney said that the team is starting to grasp the concept of “breaking” opponents. All season, Coach Graham has touched on the power of pushing an opponent past their limits, ultimately causing them to lose the match before it truly ends. Some wrestlers experienced that and grew a lot more.
The team will come back after the holiday break and host the Battle for the Belt on Jan 5, where all three Sanpete high schools will duel it out for bragging rights and the chance to bring the traveling fight belt back to their wrestling room for the year.
