MANTI—Lady Templars Coach Brennon Schweikart said he’d been looking all season long for a win where both the offense and defense were up to full potential.
Last week, he got it.
The Manti girls’ basketball team looked stellar in a blowout win over Juab last Tuesday, 49-29, the lowest point total allowed by Manti this season. The Lady Templars moved their overall record to 8-6 with a 2-1 mark in Region 14.
“It is what we have been looking to do,” Schweikart said. “We had a balanced attack on offense and a great attack on defense. It was a great team effort, and we’re excited to keep this thing rolling.”
Manti had multiple players in double figures as junior Heidi Jorgensen led all scorers with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Seniors Breanne Wayman and Sharlie Alder each scored 11 points, and the Lady Templars combined to make eight 3-pointers.
By the time the first quarter was over, Manti had erased all doubt about who was walking out of the gym with a victory. The Lady Templars raced out to a 17-2 lead as Jorgensen was flying all over the court, grabbing steals and shooting the ball. Leading 17-5 at the end of the quarter, Manti didn’t let off the gas as they pushed their lead to 28-13 at the half.
The second half was a sluggish effort for both teams as they scored 12 total points combined in the third quarter, but Manti further distanced the lead to close out the game in the fourth.
The Lady Templars will be at home to take on Union on Tuesday then will travel to Delta this Thursday. They’ll then prepare to host North Sanpete next Tuesday.
