Miss Sanpete contestant plans human trafficking awareness fundraiser

EPHRAIM—Although the Miss Sanpete 2021 pageant is over, one contestant has already been trying to realize her platform for half a decade, and this month she will host another event meant to raise awareness to human trafficking.

Karlie Strickland, 18, of Ephraim, has been pursuing her platform “Breaking the Silence on Human Trafficking,” since long before her run for Miss Sanpete. After learning about human trafficking and the efforts of anti-human-trafficking organization Operation Underground Railroad, Strickland has been passionate about the cause and has been working to make a difference by holding fundraising events and educational classes meant to raise awareness for kids and adults about the issue.

“I want to be the voice for the voiceless,” Strickland says. “We are stronger and louder together. We can all start now and here with Sanpete County.”

Strickland has a fundraising event coming up at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug 18—a bowling competition at SnoCap Lanes in Ephraim. Funds raised from the event will go towards Operation Underground Railroad.

“The reason why I’m doing this fundraiser is to bring light to the darkness, and to save more kids,” Strickland says, “And to educate my community on this sensitive topic. Please come out to support and fight against human trafficking with me.”
