MORONI—Shortly after being named Utah Teacher of the Year, sixth grade Spanish Dual Language Immersion teacher Talia Casares died unexpectedly.

On Sept. 4, the Utah State Board of Education named the Moroni Elementary educator as the 2027 Utah Teacher of the Year. On Monday, Sept. 15, the North Sanpete School District announced her passing on social media.

“Señora Casares was an amazing teacher; she had a special way of making students feel seen, valued, and capable. Her love for her students, her passion for learning, and her joy in teaching were evident in everything she did,” the school district posted. “She believed in her students and encouraged them to believe in themselves. The relationships she built, the lessons she taught, and the many lives she touched will remain a lasting part of the Moroni Elementary family and North Sanpete School District.”

The district acknowledged in their post that the loss may raise a multitude of emotions and questions among colleagues as well as past and present students. Officials added that school counselors will provide a safe, supportive environment for students and staff to express their feelings and learn to cope with their grief.

The district concluded the post by sharing that its thoughts and prayers are with Casares’ family, her students, colleagues and everyone whose life she touched.

At the time of press, no details were available yet on funeral services.
