New trail expected to provide access to waterfall in Spring City Canyon

SPRING CITY—Most respondents to a recent public survey expressed support for a proposed network of new nonmotorized trails in Ephraim and Spring City canyons, according to information released by the Sanpete County Travel & Tourism Department.

The proposal calls for approximately 4.5 miles of new trails, including a route that would provide easier public access to a waterfall that is currently difficult to reach.

Survey responses reflected both enthusiasm and concern among community members.

“Yes please. I used to hike in Salt Lake and Weber County all the time. Moved down here and would love to continue to do so,” wrote Jean-Marcel Laurent.

Others opposed the proposal, citing concerns about preserving undeveloped public lands.

“I’m against these trails being built. It’s hard to find places that are still truly wild anymore,” wrote Kayden Thomas of Ephraim.

Officials said the responses would help determine whether and how the trail system moves forward.

According to Sanpete County Travel Director Kevin Christensen, 75.5% of survey respondents rated their support for the project as either a 4 or 5 on a five-point scale, with one person expressing opposition and five expressing strong support.

If constructed, the trail system would be designed for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. Project organizers said the new trails would expand recreational opportunities while reducing the use of informal trails and helping protect natural resources.

If the project continues to advance, construction could begin later this season.
