The Region 12 and Region 14 swim meets took place last week as the corresponding teams met in Richfield and Ephraim.

Leading the scores in Sanpete County were the North Sanpete Hawk swimmers. Both boys and girls placed third in the overall scoring at Region 14, and Manti was close behind, placing fourth in both.

The Gunnison swim team competed in Region 12 with the 3A teams, due to not having swim in 2A through UHSAA. Both boys and girls placed sixth overall.

Individually on the girls’ side of the pool, North Sanpete’s Tori Day brought home the only gold to Sanpete County. Day placed first in the 200-freestyle with a time of 2:15.72 over Aimee Thurman of Millard with a time of 2:18.07. Day also took second place in the 500-freestyle with a time of 6:17.11 behind Thurman by only .04 one-hundredths of a second.

The Lady Hawks’ 200-yard freestyle medley team and the 200-yard freestyle relay team both placed third in their respective swims. Team members included Abby Bench, Phaedra Lamb, Sydney Smith, Day and Kendra Smith.

The Lady Templars placed second in the 400-freestyle relay with a time of 4:51.61, behind Millard’s team, who raced in 4:15.87. Team members are Addison Thomas, Janessa Bridges, Kelsty Fowles and Lillian Wasden.

The North Sanpete boys’ teams placed third in the 200-medley relay, the 200-freestyle relay and the 400-freestyle relay. Teammates among those teams include Brady Smith, Joshua Thompson, Gideon Palmer, Joshua Thompson, Spencer Day, Warren Jones, and Joseph Holbrook.

Palmer also placed second overall in the 200-medley between two swimmers from Union, the region champions. Holbrook placed second and Palmer third in the 100-butterfly, and Smith placed third in the 100 backstock.

Gunnison’s Tyler Waters placed third at Region 12 in the 100 yard freestyle, being the Bulldog’s only individual to place at region.

Placing in the top three at region meets doesn’t automatically qualify you for the state meet, just as not placing doesn’t disqualify a swimmer.

The top 32 times in all regions combined will make up the brackets for state swim, which will take place at BYU on Feb. 11 and 12.
