SARATOGA SPRINGS—On the strength of first place wins in two categories and high placement in other categories, Gunnison Valley High School won the 2A regional championship in cheerleading over the weekend.
At the region meet on Saturday, Jan. 8 at Saratoga Springs High School, the team placed first in Varsity Show Cheer, first in Sideline Cheer and second in Sideline/Timeout Freestyle.
There was also a region jump-off, where five of the Gunnison Valley High School cheerleaders compete for best jumps. Asia Lozano, JaKelle Sorenson, Brinley Hansen, Wyatt Monroe and Jerry Turijan competed. Sorenson and Lozano made the top three and will move on to the state jump off competition.
After missing the region and state competitions last year due to COVID-19, the team and coaches knew they needed to work hard to be competitive in the 2021/22 season, Coach Danie Comin said. Only 5 of the 21 current cheerleaders had ever set foot on a competition mat.
“This experience for most of team…it’s a memory they will never forget,” Coach Comin said.
Coach Kim Sorenson said when this year’s team was chosen back in March, 2021, she knew they would do awesome things.
The team will compete in the state championship meet Jan. 21 at Salt Lake Community College.
Besides Comin and Sorenson, the team is coached by Taylor Moosman.
“We are so proud of this team and all their hard work and dedication,” said Sorenson.
